If last night's opening to the 2017-18 season is any indication, we are in for a adrenaline rushed, high voltage season, and it will be all an All-Canadian Cup Final with Edmonton taking on Toronto. Ok, that might be jumping to the gun too quickly, but both teams looked like Cup contenders, and dominated their opponents. Two players stood out for me last night. The first being Auston Matthews.
This kid has so much poise, and understanding of the game. Very smart, and can thread a pass like very few can. For example, check out his assist on Marleau's goal. (Skip to 4:51 of the video to see the highlight) See here: Steve Mason is like, "What do you want me to do?" ,just like the Jets defense, are like "Ummmm don't look at me!". The M & M (Marleau and Matthews) combo should be a tastfull duo, and they will melt in your hockey mouth, and not in your hands... Ok, bad pun, but I had to use it. Ohhhhh put Marner on their line and you have the MMM line. Sounds yummy for hockey fans!!!
Then you have Connor McDavid, who single handingly cooled off the Calgary Flames. (scoring all 3 goals for the Oilers) His second goal was the stand out though. See here: (skip to 4:44 of the video) Holy Jumping!!! McDavid went from 0 to 100 in like 3 seconds. My god!! Poor T.J Brodie....There is no chance for him there. You just can't do anything against that. I don't think that there is another player in the league that can do what McDavid did on that goal. The most impressive part of that goal is that he was able to catch up to the rolling puck, and totally take it top corner, against a bewildered and confused Mike Smith.
It's only one night, but I am already pumped up for the season. Here are the results of all games from last night:
Toronto 7
Winnipeg 2
(Matthews,Marleau and Van Riemsdyk each had 3 points)
Edmonton 3
Calgary 0
(Hat-trick by Connor McDavid)
St.Louis 5
Pittsburgh 4 (OT)
(OT goal by Alex Pietrangelo)
Philadelphia 5
San Jose 3
(Hat-trick by Wayne Simmonds)
Tonight should be another fun-filled night, with 8 games. Hockey is on, and I like it!!!
