And another season came to an end last night, and another possibility of a dynasty is in full progression. The Pittsburgh Penguins are the real deal people! The first team to win 'back-to-back" Cups since the Detroit Red Wings.(1997 and 1998) the Penguins have cemented their name as one of the best teams in our era.
And how about Sidney Crosby. A player that suffered a concusion in the 2nd round of the playoffs, roughed up, not in 100% form due to injuries, wining his 3rd Cup and 2nd straight Conne Symthe! That puts in up their and maybe even beyond Mario Lemieux achievement. However, let's get off the comparison train and just say that Crosby is in a league of his own. He is the best player in the NHL, and the competition is not even close.
What is even more impressive is that there is no reason to think that Pens can't win again next year. Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel will be back. Matt Murray is a stud in goal, and the Pens won't be losing any big names due to Free Agency. With a healthy Letang, the Pens will be in fine shape next year. Critics will say their defense is their weak spot, which is true. However they won a cup with a battered defense core. It is a testament of how well coached this team in.
And then there is the revelation of the playoff, Jake Guentzel. 13 goals, 5 of those being game winning goals! It will be interesting to see how he will perform next year. No matter what happens, the Penguins will once again be a competitive team. Could Crosby etch his name in a 4th Stanley Cup??? Only time will tell.
