It's only 2 games into the Penguins/Capitals series, but Sidney Crosby is showing once again, why he is one of the best Captain's in the league. Badly outplayed early in Game 2, Crosby was not panicking, and blocked a shot that led to a Penguins goal. That block turned the tide for the Penguins, who never looked back after that. If you are a teammate of Crosby, and you see him blocking shots like that. Well, it has to inspire you. I mean if I was his teammate I would be "Wow, this guy is our top goal scorer, and he is out there blocking shots! " Showing that he can get down and dirty, and do the little things to help his team. I mean, that really has to spark a team, and this shows why Crosby is such a formidable force.
Do you see Oveckhin doing this? Do you see his teammates drawing motivation from him? Yes Ovy can hit, and he is an offensive juggernaut. However, does he truly do all that a Captain should do? It's not just "Hey, give me the puck, and I will try to score", that makes you a great captain. You have to learn to play all aspects of the game. You have to show you TEAM spirit, just like Jonathan Toews does this, Anze Kopitar does, Zdeno Chara too. Those players, along with Sidney Crosby have won the Stanley Cup the last 8 years. They have learned to adapt their game during the Cup Playoffs. Ovechkin does not have what it takes to lead his team, and this is the the Capital will once again, not make it past the 2nd round,
Don't get me wrong, as a offensive product, Ovy is one of the best. Also, he can dish out the hits, which makes him a physical force. However there are other aspects of playing hockey, that truly make you a "Captain", Being a captain is not about having some humongous ego and "pass the puck to me" style. Max Pacioretty has the same problem. It's not "give me the puck", it's " what can I do to help my TEAM win!
This is something Ovechkin obviously lacks, and it shows in how the Capitals play. The Capitals have now made the players 9 years in a row. However, they have never reached past the second round during that time, and it looks like that trend will continue this season.
It will be interesting to see how the Capitals come out to play in Game 3. Maybe they will read this blog article and finally learn how to play as a team????? That would be awesome!! However, like Max Pacioretty trying to score in the playoffs, don't count on it.
