Talk about a breakout season for him! Yes, he has had 3 straight season of 40+ points, but he was never looked at as a true offensive juggernaut. That has changed this year,as he is in the top 10 of pretty much every offensive categories. Also those 9 power play goes is impressive. This is Cam's 6th season in the NHL. and he appears to be thriving within John Tortorella's system. This is good news for Columbus Blue Jackets fan, and bad news for the rest of the league.
Cam is not a big forward (5ft7) which explains why he was not drafted until the 6th round of the 2008 NHL draft. That pick is turning out to be a steal for the Blue Jackets! One thing that stick out with Cam is his speed and soft hands. He has quitely become the leader of this surprising Blue Jackets team. He has the second best Point Per 60 min at 3.66. (Second only to Sidney Crosby) There are alot of bright spots in Columbus this year, but Atkinson might just be the one that shines the brightest. If he can continue to play well, and help lead the Blue Jackets deep into the playoffs, he might finally get the attention he deserves. For now, keep an eye on him, as he might just need up into possible Art Ross Trophy consideration.
