Welcome to another 2016-17 Rookie Spotlight, where I will be looking at rookies making their NHL debut during the 2016-17 season. Today we look at Matthew Tkachuk, from the Calgary Flames.

Age: 19

Size: 6ft2 202 lbs

Hometown: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

Jersey #: 19

Drafted: 1st Round 6th Overall in 2016 draft by the Calgary Flames

Position: Left Wing

Junior Team: London Knights (OHL)

2016-17 stats: GP 33 G 7 A 13 Pts 20

Comparable NHL players: Corey Perry

- Matthew Tkachuk is quickly establishing himself as a reliable forward, who can play both aspects of the game. He is a gritty player, with a high hockey IQ. He is the son of former NHLer Keith Tkachuk. He is a versatile player, who can play on any of the top 3 lines. He has done alot of good things this year, and his efforts seem to be overshadowed by fellow NHL rookies Auston Matthews and Patrick Laine. He might not have the flair and offensive talent as those players, but he is just as important to his team's success.

He has skill too, just look at his 1st NHL goal:

In Tkachuk, the Flames have a future captain, and perennial leader on their hands. There is no reason why he can't become the next Corey Perry. So keep an eye on this kid, as things are going to get good.
