It is time once again for another "Weekly Warrior". This week we spotlight the phenom that is Connor McDavid, who currently plays with the Edmonton Oilers. He is one of the most dynamic players in the NHL, and will become the next Sidney Crosby. At 19 years old, he is already dominating the league. Let's look at his numbers so far this year.
GP = 28
G = 11
A = 25 ***most in the league***
Pts = 36 ***most in the league***
Plus/minus = 7
GWG = 3
ATOI: 21:02 ***7th in the league by a forward***
Those are superstar numbers! He is well ahead in the NHL scoring race, as he has 7 more points than Nikita Kucherov. It was expected that Connor McDavid would dominate the league, but to do it in already his second season.... Well that is impressive! If he had not been sidelined with an injury last year, he might have led the league in points as well. So far in his career he has 84 points, in 73 games. That is an average of 1.15 points a game. For today's hockey, those are Gretzky type of numbers.
What is fascinating about McDavid, is he has that calm/cool demeanor about him. Similar to Jonathan Toews. At 19 years old, he is already the Captain of the Edmonton Oilers, and the quintessential leader of that organisation. The Oilers sit a top of the Pacific Division. Yes, that's not a dream, that is reality. Hard to believe but true. McDavid plays a big role in that. The only concern is that McDavid will be looking for a HUGE pay raise at the end of next season. (which is when his current $925,000 contract expires) That's expected for one of the most talented players in the league. He could easily ask for Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews type of $$$ (10 million per year) Will the Oilers be able to pay him that? And still keep the team competitive??? That is something I am sure the Oilers management is VERY concerned about. However, for now Oilers fans, live the dream. Take advantage of the moment. You currently have the biggest superstar in the NHL playing on your team. A dream come true, for now.....
