Have the Oilers finally struck gold?

The Oilers have been digging and digging for the past several years. Trying to find that golden glimmer of Stanley Cup greatness. It has been a painful, and arduous journey for this team filled with talent, that has never seemed to get things to work out. Could they have finally found that jackpot? Or is this just another fools gold?

Edmonton has a history of having a slow October. In the past 5 years (excluding the shortened lock out season of 2012-13) they are 21W 25L 8T. Take out there 7W 2L 2T 2011-12 season, and those stats look even worse. With last night's victory against the Capitals the Oilers are now 6W 1L to start the season. A big victory against, a tought opponent. They are getting great goal-tending from Cam Talbot, and Conner McDavid are leading the charge. The big difference I see this year in the team, is they have a new mantra, a new identity. The kids have finally grown up!

This could be due to many factors, but the principal I believe is the addition of Milan Lucic. Love him or hate him, Lucic brings a certain identity to the team, one that the Oilers have not had before. A rugged power forward, who can score. He also brings a different dymanic to the Oilers locker room. As well the Oilers defensive core seems to be more stable this year. Kris Russell and Andrej Sekera are logging big time minutes. Darnell Nurse seems to be coming in to his own, and Adam Larsson has brought his defensive prowess to the team.

Now, it is still early in the season, so the Oilers could slip and slide back to their old habits. Only time will tell.
